ASME SA-193 Grade B16 Bolting Specification

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II Part A Reproduction of ASTM A193 B16

ASME SA-193 Grade B16 is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II Part A reproduction of ASTM A193 Grade B16. Chemistry, mechanical properties, and supplementary requirements are identical. The two specifications differ only in administrative scope: ASTM A193 is the underlying ASTM-published standard, while ASME SA-193 is the ASME-republished version used for material that will carry the ASME stamp on a pressure-vessel data package.

    When to specify SA-193 B16 vs A193 B16

    • SA-193 B16: pressure-vessel-attached bolting under the ASME BPVC stamp (Section VIII Div 1, Div 2, Div 3); ASME-stamped bolting that goes into the vessel data package; project specifications that explicitly require the SA prefix (common in US and Saudi Arabian pressure-vessel work)
    • A193 B16: piping flange bolting per ASME B31.1 / B31.3; flange bolting per ASME B16.5; distributor stock; general industrial high-temperature bolting where the ASME data package is not the procurement vehicle

ASME data-package requirements (Section II Part A specific)

When bolting is supplied under SA-193 for pressure-vessel attachment, the mill certificate must include the following additional ASME-specific data:

    • SA-193 specification number explicitly cited on the certificate
    • ASME Code Case number (if applicable for grade restrictions or service-specific permissions)
    • Heat-treatment record sufficient for ASME inspector review (austenitise + temper temperatures and times)
    • Tensile-test result traceable to the heat-treat lot
    • Authorized Inspector (AI) sign-off on the certificate for ASME-stamped applications
    • Material-Test-Report (MTR) format aligned with ASME BPVC NB-2000 / VIII-2 Article 3.10 requirements

    Available SA-193 B16 product forms

    • Stud bolts per ASME B18.31.2 (inch) / B18.31.1M (metric)
    • Heavy hex bolts per ASME B18.2.1 / B18.2.3.3M
    • Threaded rods per ASME B18.31.2 (inch) / B18.31.1M (metric)
    • Round bar (mill source) per ASTM A29 + ASTM A484 dimensional tolerances

    Certification regime under SA-193

    • EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill certificate (default) - references SA-193 specification, heat-treatment record, full chemistry and mechanical test results
    • EN 10204 Type 3.2 third-party witnessed (DNV, Lloyd’s Register, TÜV, Bureau Veritas) - for high-criticality ASME-stamped equipment
    • ASME Code Section II Part A traceability - mill records preserved for the duration required by the vessel registration
    • PED 2014/68/EC certificate - European Pressure Equipment Directive compliance
    • NORSOK M-650 QTR - if applicable for offshore SA-193 bolting
